Staircase House
staircase
A staircase is a construction designed to bridge a large vertical distance by dividing it into smaller vertical distances, called steps.
Sitting on a hill site in a suburban location surrounded by other houses this house bridges the vertical distance from the road to the top of the site with an internal stair. This circulation provides the access to volumes that attach to it and open out to the sun and the site to the North. It also protects the house from the neighbours to the South allowing privacy to the interior spaces, while allowing the volume of the house to be experienced dramatically internally.
The site is also stepped, providing different outdoor living spaces opening from distinct interiors. The terracing of the site and the arrangement of spaces builds privacy into both the interior and exterior while offering the neighbourhood an engaging facade that overlooks the street.
