- material that fills or is used to fill a space or hole.”the cave infill consists of silt and rock”.
- fill or block up (a space or hole).
In ‘filling the hole’ the site offered, we were cognisant of the need to retain open-ness and a feeling of space. Infill houses offer challenges with respect to privacy and sunlight access, and in this instance we were very sensitive of the need to be low impact on the surrounding dwellings. The site has a beautiful northern aspect with plenty of sun, and the project response started with positioning the outdoor space and working around that to answer the brief and remain aware of the planning constraints. The filling of the space started with the positioning of another space, which was to remain open.
A couple and dogs became a young family on the path through this project, with the family expanding again in the intervening time since occupation. The house provides large volumes in small footprints and variation of ceiling height is used to further define space and give the feeling from the inside that the house is larger than it is. Careful planning allows living spaces to be joined or used separately, and the house becomes a compact sanctuary within the suburban Petone fabric.
