Wilton Playcentre
Wilton Playcentre is a parent-run co-operative providing early childhood education with parents as first teachers. Decisions at playcentre are made by consensus, and the organisation recognises Te Tiriti o Waitangi as our founding document.
The existing Playcentre building was problematic, it did not meet earthquake standards, it was cold, difficult to heat because it was uninsulated and it was damp. The building needed re-cladding to bring it up to current code and to reduce the earthquake risks of the existing bricks.
There was also a lack of cover to external space. On session the interior was busy with many small children in essentially one large volume. This didn’t provide space for children to engage in more large muscle or messy play when it was wet or cold outside, which in turn mean that the interior was more noisy and more management of play was required by adults on session to ensure children were not interrupted.
The scheme provides two separate covered outdoor spaces which provide exterior play space even when it is cold or wet. Messy play can be set up and children can use ride-on toys, or large mats with a trapeze swing without interruption. Carpentry is always accessible and available. The interior has become more settled and harmonious and the centre can extend the play of all its children.
The upgrade to the building fabric has resulted in a warm, dry interior which is safe, and will continue to support families growing through their early childhood years together.
